Who can I talk to about my depression?

I've been depressed off and on for years and it's getting really awful again. I'm not suicidal but it's crippling and since all of my friends have been away at college we're barely close anymore, and my parents are a big source of my depression so I can't talk to them. I have no money to pay for counseling. Is there a hotline or something you can call just for depression, NOT suicidal thoughts?

    Sometimes i have the same position like you...but, i know what i need to do...there is only one that will be with us all time...our God...when i depressed, i will pray...but, without knowing...the depressed gone and i'm relieved...that's from me...tnx

    There are things online that might suit you better than a hotline. I say that because the hotlines are oriented mainly toward emergency situations, which apparently is not the case here. Yes, if you do feel suicidal it would be a good idea. Samaratans is a service often mentioned here.

    Mainly I'm thinkling of MoodGYM, a therapy program run by a university. They say they've tested it and it's a valid treatment. There's a number of standard screening tests, like CESD R, which can give you a sense of how serious the problem is, although it's only a screening test.

    Things I often tell depressed people

    When things are especially bad, take things one at a time -- a day at a time, a morning at a time, or even five minutes. A favorite movie or music can help. Many people get relief by going for a walk. Within reason, some extra food will lift your spirits, whereas alcohol, which makes depression worse, should be avoided. Don't isolate yourself. Talk with somebody, even if you don't feel like it.

    Stay in touch with your feelings. When you have an unpleasant mood shift, take one or two slow, deep breaths and examine the thought that just occurred to you, in terms of its truth and its relevance to what you're doing at the moment. If you find yourself in a stressful situation, take slow, deep breaths until you're calm, then think carefully about what to do. Exercise has been shown to help with depression. The best exercise is the kind you enjoy. People with depression who tend to remain indoors often benefit from increased exposure to sunlight.

    Usually, people go into depression in a downward spiral of negativity in thinking and behavior, one leading to the other. Getting out of depression is an upward spiral of healthy thinking and behavior, one leading to the other. In some cases, medication plays an important part, but healthy thought and behavior are still necessary. It doesn't happen overnight, and it helps to be patient. A sense of humor is a big plus.

    The most versatile treatment of all is healthy lifestyle – good for all kinds of depression. If you go to the University of Kansas TLC website, you can read about the lifestyle program developed there. It's things we all need anyway. It's low cost and low risk. Book - Depression Cure by therapist/researcher Dr Steve Ilardi.

    You can read a cognitive therapy book to find out about it. For some people, the book itself serves as a good treatment. The best one seems to be The Feeling Good Handbook by Dr. David Burns, the book recommended most often for depression by professionals. Another good book is the book on insomnia for women by Meir Kryger. There are good books for insomnia.

    Treatment usually begins with a visit to the GP, but remember this is not a mental health professional. There's no one-size-fits-all solution. There's a number of treatments, and there's an advantage to having a professional who knows how to use them.

    depression is just a state of mind. You may just think its hard but its actually very easy to make yourself happy. Be thankful for everything you got. such as having that wonderful house and you are able to stay warm, have computer, got food to eat etc lots of people dont have that... and yet not depressed..If you want something more, change your path. Honestly talking to counselors or going back and forth with doctors is just a waste of time ( from my own experience). Start different path in your life. Start going to gym perhaps, listen to different kind of musics etc. I wish you all the best!

    I don't know of any such number but you can email someone who answers your question and maybe that will lead to a friendship.
