all pictures and word docs suddenly disappear?

I left mozzila firefox open because my bf wanted something. I came back a half hour later and for some reason the start bar at the bottom of the screen had grown larger and some of my folders from my desktop were i it. I thought the computer had randomly created shortcuts and I started deleting them hoping to make it go back to normal. Now the files are missing. I had a folder with several folders containing all my pictures and word docs and they are no where to be found. I system restored twice from different points and the files are still missing. Where did they go??????????????

Update:

I just right click deleted them. It's only one folder that Ive lost the contents too It SHOULD of gone to the recycle bin but it didnt... The folder is still there but the files are gone... so many files.

Update 2:

how do you shift delete things??

Update 3:

after using recuva the vast majority of my files are still missing. Recuva only found things I intentionally deleted, mostly a long time ago, and some stuff randomly from the internet that im pretty sure I never saved to my computer ever. It found almost nothing from the files in the folder I wanted.

The files may not be deleted, but maybe moved? I was not able to find them in the search option on my computer through.

Try the free version of Recuva from Piriform: http://www.piriform.com/recuva

Their free version of C Cleaner is outstanding. So I think this is worth a try.

did you delete them or shift delete them? If you have shift-deleted, then its perhaps difficult to get them back. But you can perhaps try using a few of the softwares available to restore deleted files [sadly, a lot of them are paid ware.]
