How can I convince my mom to buy me a ferret?
She said she won't get me one because she thinks the concept of a caged animal is cruel. I tried to explain that I will be playing with it 4 or more hours a day and that it has toys, a bed, food and water and she still doesn't care. I really want one because I'm home alone almost everyday with nothing to do. I'm pretty lonely to be completely honest. I've done so much research and I'm 100% sure that a ferret is the pet I want. I'm really mad at her because to me, having a ferret is more than some stupid animal in a cage. For me, it would be a best friend since it lives for 10 years. Please tell me how to convince her that a caged animal is not cruel unless you keep it in its cage 24/7! I would be so much happier with a ferret to play with and hang out with! I used up a lot of my free time finding out EVERYTHING about them, from their diet to how to make a ferret happy. Tell me how to convince her!

1) make a power point about ferret care and interesting facts
2) Show her how much money a ferret will cost weekly, monthly and yearly
3) Tell her how much money you have saved, and how you plan on paying for the ferret
4) get a trifold poster and fill it with interesting facts (like that they sleep 18+ hours in their cage :), and price charts
good luck, I did all of these and my parents were very impressed, but my dad had a ferret when he was a kid and he convinced my mom that ferrets smell EXTRMELY bad, even though I know they don't. I have interacted with ferrets many times. So I just dropped it and moved on. Now I am a kitten foster mom :D. I can get a ferret when I have my own house.

They live more like 7 years and most of them die from cancer of some type, the 'pet quality' animals we have all come from former fur farms in the past. They bred them only for fast growing to harvest the fur so long lifespans weren't bred for. It messed up the genetics pretty bad so getting one that gets over 5 years of age without any issues is doing good. 7 in getting way up there. 10 is positively ancient and nobody in our ferret club has one that old.
Best book is Ferrets For Dummies. You need to check on the diet for them, they need specific requirements, the protein content has to be 30% or higher. And find out if any vets in your area will treat ferrets, they're considered exotics and most vets don't have training for them.
If your mom is more agreeable to a smaller cage (ferrets need a LARGE cage) and the 5 year lifespan, consider a rat, they're far friendlier, bite far less often, and can be trained to do all sorts of tricks. Some come in lavender color now (a form of 'blue'), there's dumbo eared ones and many different breeds.
Ferrets have an odor you can't get rid of, also. They get underfoot, no potted plant, wastebasket or box is safe from them. They can't be 100% potty trained. And they have two major diseases - adrenal and Aleutian - that are expensive to treat. Like around $1,000 to fix, it's surgery.
