Need help substituting for a recipe?

Hi, I'm making slow cooker mac & cheese and among other things, it calls for:

1 cup Cheddar cheese

1 cup Fontina cheese

1 cup Provolone cheese

I have the Cheddar cheese, but not the two others! (Never even heard of Fontina...)

Is there anything I can use to substitute? I have Mozzarella.

What do I do? I know I should probably just wait on this recipe, but I REALLY want to make it tonight!

Any help is appreciated! Thanks!

    Do it tonight!

I have not made mac & cheese in the slow cooker, but there is nothing wrong with using all cheddar if that is what you have.

I would not use mozzarella - the texture is too stringy.

Jack would be fine or if you have some of the shredded Mexican blend people use for tacos, that would be good too.

If you have some parmesan, that would be GREAT. Or any other hard italian cheese like podano or romano.

    Gruyere is awesome too.

Don't sweat it. If you can't get to a grocery store use all cheddar. If you're used to cheddar and don't yet have a "taste" for other cheeses you will never miss them.

Beware...if you DO start expanding your cheese horizon it's really hard to go back to just cheddar. :-)

Mac & cheese is pretty freaking awesome - you are making me hungry! What time is dinner?

P.S. SHARP cheddar is great in cheese sauce...and a dash of mustard too.

Use more cheddar and more provolone to make up the cup of Fontina. Don't bother using any mozzarella, it won't contribute any taste to mac and cheese. If you have any Parmesan, some of that would be good.

These cheeses r some of my favorites.

Fontina is a cow's milk cheese, that melts well, and has a nutty flavor.

Provolone is a semi hard cheese ranging from sharp to sweet - I love it in sandwiches and meatballs. :)

You don't have to put these in your mac - play around w what u have, see what u like best.

    Try cheddar, mozzarella, provolone....

    cheddar, different types...

Add cream cheese :) sour cream :)

Mac Cheese is very forgiving. Your recipe refers to shredded cheeses. You can use mozzarella, Gouda, American, Cheddar, any type you want. Just use 3 'different' kinds. To make it even better, use a 4th cheese-in slices-on top of the dish before you bake it.

You can use any cheeses you like. All cheddar, is fine, use 3 cups.

it is worth using the correct cheeses! Wait til you go to store and look in the cheeses cooler! If they don't have the Fontina, ask one of the clerks nearby for what to substitute for this one. Yes, I have seen it in my podunk town stores!

Cooking is all about the journey, for there is no destination. There is always the next meal.

Don't be shy, try the mozzarella. Add some white wine, italian seasoning, bread crumbs.

Simply use more of those you have ... I would put Velveeta in it also ... it's a lot creamier than the others...
