How do I know if a need a Visa, or just a passport?

My friend and I are planning a trip to the Dominican Republic. Him and I both live in the US; him in Puerto Rico and me stateside in Florida. How do I know, or even find out where, when a person in the US needs just a passport, or needs a visa as well? Also, if and when a traveler needs also needs a Visa, how does he or she get one and when they need one? Thank you all.

Update:

I am an American citizen. Born and raised.

You google "Visa Dominican Republic" and less than a minute later you should have your answer.

You mentioned that you live in the United States, but since I neither know your immigration status nor your country of citizenship, I can't directly answer whether or not you'll need a visa.

Source(s): An immigrant from Europe, I live in the charming old mission town of San Buenaventura and work as an attorney in Santa Barbara, California.
