Pug on Steroids is not Working. Please help!?
Our pug, Lucy Lu, is lil over 4 years old. She had been on steroids for a week now, as vet suspecting that she has disc issue. After week on the med, it seems that it is making it a little worse as she seems unresponsive to the meds. Everytime we carry her outside to pee and poop, she would shiver for next 15 minutes or so. We decided to take her back to the vet for x ray. It was negative and it was normal. We were given a pain meds to give to her as well. It is very frustrating cuz vet recommends that if she is not healing in the next couple of days, we would come down to a decision. I couldn't believe it and it can't be it for her as just few weeks earlier, she was very playful and in such a joy! Is there somebody out there that had experienced the same issue, or at least similar to it? I am just screaming for ideas and help, seek whatever possible it would take to heal her. This is my girlfriend's dog and I'm animal lover so I cannot accept that there is nothing we can do. It has to be very small problem that is affecting her to behave this way. Please help?
We give her 1 and half dosage of Prednisone. I have noticed that it made her shiver more, couldn't walk for long, pants at times, possible panicking...
H, can you please contact me? Your story sounds very similar to what we are going thru. We really need your advice. We have given our pug, 18-20 lb, 7.5 mg of prednisone twice a day for a week now and it seems that it had paralyzed her legs, it seems that the side effect is muscle weakening and has to do something with the joint. We are considering in reducing it by halving it as it's recommended in weaning/reducing the prednisone to minimum the risk. Now, our question is how do you handle your dog w/ pooping/peeing issue when he was temporarily paralyzed?? We are struggling with that... most of the times, our pug is struggling to be comfortable and relaxing. It has been very frustrating...

When my dog was almost 2, he fell off my bed and landed on his back. He had a spinal injury. Two of the discs in his back were injured. He was paralyzed from the waist down for almost a month.
He was on steroids and pain meds. One day I was in the kitchen and I turned around and there he was. Just standing there. Earlier that day he couldn't walk.
He is going to be 16 the first week of next month. He does have arthritis in his back but it's easily treated with Tramadol for pain.
I don't think that your dog has had enough time to heal. Steroids should only be given for about a week or sometimes 2 if needed.
My dog went from completely paralyzed from the waist down to walking, running and turning 16.
Don't decide anything drastic.
I would get a referral to an orthopedic specialist or just wait and see if she improves. If I would have put my dog down, I wouldn't have had him for all of these wonderful years.
Prednisone isn't meant for long term use. She may be having an adverse reaction to that particular drug.
Don't feel like there is nothing you can do. Try and keep her still as much as you can. Try and get her some Tramadol for the pain. It's the absolute best for dogs. Rimadyl can cause kidney problems.
Tramadol is so good that they even use it on dogs with cancer.
Don't give up. She will heal. It will just take time.

My beagle has had disk issues and she was given prednisone and tremadol and she had to be weaned of the prednisone and it did give her the shakes.

I would suggest getting a referral to an orthopedic vet rather than accepting one vet's opinion. Good luck
