It appears to be the seedpod of a black or honey locust tree, although we can't be certain without seeing the tree, flower, and leaves. The honey, or thorny locust, Gleditsia triacanthos, has a sweet pulp, but the tree doesn't usually grow as far north as New York.

Black locust's (Robinia pseudoacacia) pods are small and light, and easily carried long distances. Although the bark and leaves are toxic, various reports suggest that the seeds and the young pods of the black locust can be edible when cooked, since the poisons that are contained in this plant are decomposed by heat. In France and in Italy Robinia pseudoacacia flowers are eaten as beignets after being coated in batter and fried in oil.
