Enclosure for a 2.5" PATA(IDE) HDD?
I'm trying to recover data from the hard disk of a Dell Inspiron 600m. It's an old PATA with 43 pins + 4 on the side. Everything I've seen mentions 4 pins for power, 4 jumpers, and however many others there are. Are the separate 4 for power or jumpers, or are they one and the same? I've heard 39 are IDE, 4 are power and the separate 4 are for jumpers.
My big question is: What would the total count be for pins? Are the separate 4 included? I'm looking for an enclosure for the HDD and don't know which to get.
I know I don't need both, but would these guys...

Work with this?

I'm wondering because neither would include the 4 separate pins. Sorry I'm so wordy. It's just kind of important.

hi cody
yes, that will be fine ... you simply need to open the enclosure and attach the ide(pata) drive and then close it up and connect to any spare usb port
be aware however 2.5" ide/pata drives don't have any power connectors as everything is included within the 40pins and this includes data and power ..... however 3.5" ide drives require 4pin molex and the ide cable
also 2.5" ide drives can draw enough power from the usb port so that's why you don't have any power adapters with 2.5" external enclosures
you should also consider a NDAS or network direct attached storage ... this is essentially the same as NAS or network attached storage, however NDAS works over your home network but appears as a local disk in the same manner as a external storage device
I have a NDAS and i use this for all my external storage instead of using a external hard drive ..... and the model i use is the "Integral P2NDAS"( http://www.akasa.co.uk/update.php?tpl=product/prod... Enclosure&model=AK-ENP2NDAS ) ( see image below )
this cost me under £15 and requires a 3.5" ide drive ... luckily i had a spare 250gb ide drive and installation took me less than 10 minutes .. however the bundled drives wouldn't work under windows 7 and you need to download the latest drivers from http://www.akasa.co.uk/update.php?tpl=product/prod... Enclosure&model=AK-ENP2NDAS
it even works with wireless pc,s or laptops as long as you install the NDAS drivers and then associate the computer with the NDAS
most people tend to buy NAS storage devices however these tend to be more expensive and can be harder to configure ( especially for novices ) .... were as NDAS is easy to set up and once completed the NDAS will appear in windows everytime you start your pc
i hope this helps cody ... any questions let me know
good luck mate and happy xmas !

What you need is a USB 2.5 inch IDE hard drive enclosure like this one ( http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N8... you posted it will have the pins needed to use it as a external hard drive. Install the old hard drive into enclose connect to a computer after it recognizes the now external USB drive as new hardware open the hard drive and copy your files. Have done this several time with out a problem. If the hard drive does not open then it has failed and the files can not be recovered and or copied.
