How come Carolina has sewn up a playoff spot?

If Carolina loses next week and both Arizona and New Orleans win, doesn't new Orleans win the division and Arizona win the wild card spot because it has the head to head win over Carolina? if not how does Arizona get into the playoffs if it wins?

The reason is that for the Cardinals to finish 11-5, they have to beat the 49ers. That would give the 49ers five losses. If they lose tomorrow, they would finish 10-6 and the Panthers and Cardinals would be the wildcards. Should the 49ers win tomorrow and lose to the Cardinals, all three teams finish 11-5. In that scenario, ties in the division have to be broken first. The 49ers would win the tie over the Cardinals. Therefore, the first wildcard tiebreaker would be just the Panthers and the 49ers. Since the Panthers beat the 49ers they would get in the Playoffs this way too.

If the Cardinals were playing anyone else next week, the Panthers would not have clinched.

The Panthers have already clinched a playoff spot, because nothing that happens in the NFC West can eliminate the Panthers. If the Panthers win the NFC South, they're in the playoffs. If the Panthers are an 11-5 wild card, then:

    (1) If the 49ers are 12-4 division runner up, the Cardinals are 10-6, which means the 11-5 Panthers get the 6th seed over the Cardinals. If the 49ers are 12-4 division champ, meaning that the Seahawks finish 12-4, and the Cardinals still finish 10-6, then the 49ers get the 1st seed, the Seahawks get the 5th seed, and the Panthers get the 6th seed over the Cardinals.

    (2) If the 49ers are 11-4-1, the Cardinals are no better than 10-5-1, which means the 11-5 Panthers get the 6th seed over the Cardinals. If the Cardinals are 10-6, same result.

    (3) If the 49ers are 11-5, the Cardinals could be 11-5, but the 49ers would still be the higher ranked NFC West team. The Panthers would get the 5th seed in a tie-breaker with the 49ers. If the Cardinals were 10-6, same result.

    (4) If the 49ers are 10-5-1, the Cardinals could be 11-5, in which case, the Cardinals would get the 5th seed in a tie-breaker with the Panthers, and the Panthers would get the 6th seed over the 49ers. If the Cardinals were 10-5-1, the 49ers would be the higher ranked NFC West team, and the Panthers would get the 5th seed over the 49ers.

    (5) If the 49ers are 10-6, the Cardinals would be 11-5, with the same result as #4 (where the Cardinals are 11-5).
