Can I release Pokemon in Pokemon red?

I caught a Metapod and just now realized how stupid that was. I want to release him, and keep the poke ball. Can I do that?

    Nope your pokeball is gone for good. If you want to release the pokemon head to a PC in the pokemon center. In "Someone's PC" you are given the option to store or release pokemon.

    Yes you can release pokemon via the pc.you won't be able to get back the Pokeball

    You can't keep the poke ball but you can realease it in the pokemon centre
