What can you put on a dog for dry skin?
I have a Doberman that appears to have a rash or a patch of dry skin at the bottom of his neck. I've been using vegetable oil because I think he may lick it off. Any recommendations?

Does your dog usually wear a collar? Some owners don't wash their dogs' washable collars. Over time, the collars can irritate the neck and cause a skin infection. If your dog has a washable collar, I would either wash it or get a new one. We don't put our dirty socks back on after a bath, but quite often we put our dog's dirty collar back on.
Is your dog scratching at his neck? That can produce infection, when they keep scratching at something. Sometimes they're trying to scratch ears and missing. Sometimes something about the collar or tags just bothers them.
You might try cleaning the spot off with antibacterial soap and water. Rinse well and pat dry. Once it's dry, you could apply triple antibiotic ointment twice a day for a week.
Our docs recommend adding Omega 3 fatty acids to the diet. There are also special foods for sensitive skin.
Make sure you are bathing in shampoo that is designed for dogs and that it contains no soap. Dry all areas of your dog thoroughly, because bacteria loves dampness.
If this doesn't get better soon, then you need a vet visit.

If it's really just dry skin, vegetable oil won't hurt him. Vitamin E is better, you can burst the capsules and spread it as an ointment and/or give as a supplement.
You can give him oatmeal baths--you don't have to buy special shampoo, just unflavored oatmeal will do fine. Grind it up a little in a food processor or chopper or just put it in a baggie and smash it a little. Stir it into a warm water bath.
It could be ringworm, but you can treat that with Athlete's foot cream from the drugstore. It's the same exact fungus and treatment. There are two kinds, clotrimazole and terbinafine, either is fine in generic to rub on. Just remember to use it for a full 2 weeks even if the patch seems gone.
Check for mites, ticks, fleas, though, too.

My old dog gets that all the time,it's called Hot Spots. The area loses it's fur becomes red and itchy,it dries up and can become cracked. The best stuff that I have tried is called Suflodene. You can get it in a shampoo or in a liquid that you just rub into his skin. I took my dog to the vet when it first happened over 3 years ago and this is what my vet gave me. You dont have to go to the vet to get it, you can find it at most pet stores or I find it at Kmart and Walmart. It works I won't buy anything else. Good Luck!

Try adding wild salmon oil to his food and you can rub it on the rash too, however I'd try to find out what is causing the rash rather than simply worrying about treating the symptoms. If you don't find a reason it will no doubt spread.

You can put body lotion on it. it wont hurt it if the dog licks it off. Or if you can find a lotion or a salve that is very high in Lanolin. It wont hurt if they lick the lanolin off either

You can try coconut oil. It's supposed to help by both adding to food and applying externally.
