Win XP - how to upgrade to Win 8?

My PC WinXP is dying and it's time to move on up - since my laptop has Win8 it seems I should get them both on Win8, yes? Less confusing, right? Do I like Win8 - no, but I'm stuck with it in the laptop and over time they'll improve. Anyway, will they upgrade, will it cost, do I have to go buy something, if so what to buy? To give you a hint, my PC is IBM refurbished XP and it cost $300. Any help would be appreciated. Also am I going to lose everything already in XP?

There is NO upgrade from XP to 8. You wold need to buy an upgrade of Vista from XP, then buy 7 to upgrade from that and then buy 8. You would lose all your files and programs to do a new install otherwise. And any machine made for XP will not have enough ram or a good enough processor to run 8.

go to Amazon.com order the windows 8 disk. I have win 7 on my laptop and at first when i get the laptop, i thought that i sucks, but here a few months ago, i got a new Gateway desktop since it was during the time of school to start and prices were cheap at Walmart. i has win 8. Boy, Windows 8 sucks to hell.

I would just go for windows 7
