Should I get a budgie?
I'm considering getting a new pet next academic year for my room. I'm torn between getting one of the following: a pair of rats, a budgie, a parrot or a canary. Which one would be best to suit me? Bearing in mind: I won't be in my room 24/7, in fact, I'll only be in it around 4-6 hours most days because of lectures etc., I need something that can stay quiet an calm when I need to sleep, I'd like something that could form a bond with me, and that might respond to my voice and its name etc., and preferably it needs to be easy to clean out and not smell very much when it is dirty. My budget is not extensive, and I'm hoping to spend around £200 at most for the actual pet and its initial supplies (a cage etc.). Are there any pets anyone can suggest? They don't have to be the ones listed, just ones that will suit my requirements.

Budgies and parrots are probably not a good idea if you are not going to be around alot as they will get bored pretty easily. You could get a hamster or a chinchilla as they are probably easier to look after and dont get bored. you also get this really cute things called a Degu.
Reptiles are also cool but quite expensive. hope I helped.

If you are VERY serious about a parrot, then you can work on a budget of 4-6 hours a day. However, keep In mind:
The cost of the cage can cost well $200 (£122). And the bird itself (the bird I'm RECOMMENDING) will cost $600 (£366). And you will have to buy various toys, and while toys are expensive (most are usually anywhere from £9 to £18), you can make them for a LOT cheaper.
Now, does that budget seem ok? Are you willing to spend that much? Now, the bird I'm recommending is an Indian Ringneck Parakeet. It will form a bond to you, but not a strong one. Why? Because Indian Ringneck Parakeets don't form as strong of bonds as other birds, which in your case, is great! This means that your bird will be quieter(though it will be loud at times, that's inevitable), and will be more self sufficient. So you can leave it alone for longer hours and so long as it has LOTS of toys then it should be fine. HOWEVER, this is a smaller bird, it still needs a LARGE cage. Which means that you could be buying a cage for an African grey. However, the more toys and interactive things in its cage, the better it will do.
If your SERIOULSY interested in a parrot or a budgie, go here;
http://www.parrotforums.com/ same goes for canaries. If your serious, go there. However, a canary won't form a bond with you, and you'll want to get 2 females. They will need a good sized flight cage. Same goes for budgie.
I'd say, get a pair of rats. You don't sound responsible enough or interested enough in anything else. You clearly haven't dont any research (uh duh duh budgies are parrots. And you won't be able to keep anything other then a parakeet)

Hi there RhysH. I think you won't like my answer but I feel I have to give it anyway. I really care about animals, and I care about people too. I think you are not in the right position to offer an appropriate home to any pet at the moment. Definitely NOT to a bird. As Carolyn says in her answer, parrots need a lot of attention A LOT and need to be out of their cages and they are very destructive and they live till about 50+ years in many cases. And how could you think of keeping a dear little canary in a cage??
I think fish might be an alternative, but again they will need a really decent sized tank and you will need to feed them and clean their home. They will not bond with you however.
Any pet that will bond with you will require a lot of time, effort, money and enthusiasm from you. Please please be kind, think of the animal not yourself. It would be selfish of you to get a pet right now.
I have rescue birds. Poor birds that have been bought on a whim, people thinking they are cute and will talk etc. Neglected, abused....
Hope you make the right decision - that is WAIT or get some fish!

I agree with scottydog. The thing is with any type of bird, they need a lot of attention, let out of the cage and have toys to play with. They also make a lot of noise.
You dint want something smelly, then rats are out of the question because you need to clean the cage regularly. If you have rats and say they have a wheel, you need to take the wheel out at night otherwise you won't get much sleep as the wheel squeaks.
If you really want a pet, i would say a snake or iguana as they dont require much attention. Although an iguana should come out of its aquarium everyday. If its a baby, you need to feed it baby food for a while, and i remember they like kale. So i guess your best bet is a snake. Unless you are going to put more time in having a pet.
