  • Which Australian visa would be best for my girlfriend?

    Hi guys,

Me and my girlfriend are seriously considering moving to Australia in the next five or so years.

I’m hopefully going to apply for a Skilled Independent or Skilled Nominated visa as hopefully by then I’ll be a fully qualified Counselling Psychologist, Psychotherapist and Social Worker.

However, my girlfriend currently works in an industrial company, and can’t find a listing to describe what she does on the approved professions list.

We want to move there together, and by then we shan’t be married, so she won’t be able to apply for a partner visa.....or will she? Which visa would be best for her do you think?

  • What is the Centre-Right ideal society?

If true centre right politics wants deregulated markets, little ‘nanny state’ intervention in healthcare, education etc, then what would a truly right wing society look like?

When I say right wing, I mean centre right - neoliberal, socially conservative etc...

  • Calling all omniglots and bilinguals: Should I start with Japanese or Italian?

I ve always been fascinated by languages.

Now studying at postgrad level, and knowing myself a lot better, I feel like I can really chow down on a language now and be a lot more successful with it than when in my teens.

I ve been eyeing up Japanese, but have dabbled a lot with Italian also.

Japanese seems HARD and will need years of dedication.

With me being a native English speaker, should I start with Italian?? Or, do I properly start both in the anticipation that Japanese will take a lot longer?

  • What is a good first camera (between the price range of £100-£200?

I am looking to buy a my first proper camera in order to explore photography as an art from. My budget is between £100-£200. It needs to be able to take good quality photo's but I'm not looking for anything too technical - I just want to get out there and explore. I'm torn between going for the novelty and organic nature of an instant or film based camera or a bottom range DSLR. Any advice?

  • Where to start with music?

Hi guys. A while ago, on a whim I bought myself a mandolin and a 'playing the mandolin for dummies' book. However, I really want to make something meaningful from it, it's been sat dormant for a while now. Whenever I attempt to 'knuckle down' and start researching chords, notes, e.t.c, it just seems like a different language to me. Also, I'm afraid I would have to be self taught as there aren't any local teachers and I couldn't afford them if there were. I'm a 20 year old student, so any stories from any mature learners who have successfully picked it up would be very much appreciated. Hope there's some good guidance from all you maestros!

I am very interested in developing an interest in photography, however as her only have a digital compact camera, and can't afford an SLR. Most of the books and techniques I've come across are directed at use of an SLR. Are there any books/ tips available that anyone can recommend that would help me develop skills in photography with my top-range compact?

  • Have the band, 'The kills' broken up?

A couple of years ago, I discovered 'The Kills', on iTunes, and I've made do with just the same album of theirs since then. After searching for a new one, I noticed that they don't seemed to have released an album since 2011. Have they split up? And if not, where can I go to find tour dates and details of new albums?

  • What kind of lip ring should I get?

I'm looking for a thin black lip ring. I've tried adding a captive ball design like ring but found it far too difficult. I'm sure I don't want to have one with two balls at either end, but apart from that, I'm confused as to which design to go for. Any suggestions? I know no designs are easy to replace/ take out, but I'm looking for the following: a design that is relatively easy to take out and put back in, design that is subtle, and a design that isn't too fiddley. Hope you can help!

  • If I was to start learning Japanese, which text would be best to start with?

I know that there are three proper Japanese alphabets: Kanji, Katakana and Hiragana. If I was to start learning Japanese, which alphabet would be best to start with? Which is in most common use in Japan? Also, would it be best to start learning that particular one before I start learning the language? Any info would be much appreciated.

  • How can I learn informal Japanese?

I'm interested in learning Japanese, however I've heard that most language programs only teach you formal Japanese, which is not usually used by everyday people in Japan. How could I go about learning day-to-day Japanese, and do Japanese speakers suggest that I learn the formal version before/ as well as the common version? Any tips in regards to starting out would be much appreciated. Thanks.

  • Should I get a budgie?

I'm considering getting a new pet next academic year for my room. I'm torn between getting one of the following: a pair of rats, a budgie, a parrot or a canary. Which one would be best to suit me? Bearing in mind: I won't be in my room 24/7, in fact, I'll only be in it around 4-6 hours most days because of lectures etc., I need something that can stay quiet an calm when I need to sleep, I'd like something that could form a bond with me, and that might respond to my voice and its name etc., and preferably it needs to be easy to clean out and not smell very much when it is dirty. My budget is not extensive, and I'm hoping to spend around £200 at most for the actual pet and its initial supplies (a cage etc.). Are there any pets anyone can suggest? They don't have to be the ones listed, just ones that will suit my requirements.

  • Will just an iPad be ok for uni?

I'm due to go to uni in September and at the minute the only device I have that I can do word processing/ get Internet access on e.t.c is my iPad. Will this be enough for uni? Or should I get a net book/laptop too in order to get all my work done effectively. I do have a wireless keyboard for my iPad so there's no problem with typing or anything.

  • Should I learn to play the mandolin?

Should I learn to play the mandolin? I'm looking to start to learn to play a versatile instrument, which can be played with classical music, folk music, jazz music and pop music. I'm also looking for a relatively 'easy' beginners instrument. (I'm aware that no instrument is easy, but what I mean here is an instrument I can use books and practise to learn by practising a few hours a day). Also I was looking for an instrument that could be transported easily, as busking is a 'pie in the sky' idea I've always had. So, mandolin players: is the mandolin a good choice for me?

  • How did monarchs learn languages so easily?

I'm about to embark on a quest two learn Italian, and I know as well as anyone how difficult it can be. But I've always wondered: you hear many stories of British monarchs such as Henry 8th and Elizabeth 1st being fluent in Latin, French and German. Not that I'm hoping to apply their techniques, but out of interest, how did they learn so well? Was it total immersion with diplomats? Or good old fashioned vocab drills?

  • Should I learn Italian or Japanese?

I'm very very interested in starting to learn a new language over summer. However, I'm torn between Japanese and Italian. I love Italian food and the romance and flow of the language, I think it's beautiful. However, I'm also fascinated by Japanese culture (even though I don't know that much about it) and love to read manga e.t.c and would love to go to Japan someday. However, I'm aware that japanese is especially difficult to learn, especially with the other texts such as kanji e.t.c. I was considering starting with Italian and then working my way up to Japanese once I've grasped one language? Any Italian or Japanese speakers' advice would be much appreciated.

  • How do I keep my iPad screen clean!?

I got my new iPad for Christmas, and it's great, but the screen always gets covered in fingerprints so easily! I haven't got a full cover on, just a Smart Cover. I don't really like the idea of a fuller cover, because I like to keep things lightweight, but if there's no other option then I'm prepared to get one? All I needed to know was whether there was a simpler way, like a specific brand of wipe that is effectively useful? Any tips would be much appreciated.
