Who cleaned up after WW2?
Take the battle of Kursk for instance, there were thousands of bodies, wrecked tanks, planes, trucks. It would have been beyond the ability of the locals to clear all that stuff away. How many years did it take to clear out the mines, wrecks, barbed wire, and everything else?

Inside cities like Stalingrad the mess was removed when they rebuilt the city. But places like Kursk, except fro the bodies there was no cleanup. You can still go their and see rusted tanks out on the Steppe. The same for Normandy, Bastogne, St Vith. There are still old rusted hulks lying around the fields and in the forests. They still occasionally find a 5" Rocket or a un-exploded 105 MM round in farmers barnyards on occasion.
