Hong Kong is part of China (after 1997).
Professors with an ' o ' missing would only confuse you & you'll be left with no clear-cut definition of what is a country. So don't believe a Professor who can't spell his own name. Contemporary definition of a ''Country'' is one with Sovereignty. Hong Kong never had its own Sovereignty - it was a (British) Crown colony till 1997 & later passed under the Chinese Sovereignty. India though under the British rule (and not even a Dominion) was treated as a 'Country' & in that capacity was allowed to be a member of UN (for which all other UN members should accede) when it was formed. The test for Sovereignty is that it should be a UN membership, as the membership is "solely" based on it.

Hong Kong often appears on official lists of countries, such as those used by the post office, the United Nations, FedEx, etc. However, these lists come in two varieties: lists of "independent states" (actual countries) and places that are "countries" in the old-fashioned sense of the word, which could be parts of other countries.
While there are about 196 independent countries (with some borderline cases like Taiwan and Western Sahara) longer lists typically have about 240 - 270 countries. These longer lists include "areas of special sovereignty" like the Channel Islands (sometimes counted as two countries, Guernsey and Jersey), Antarctica (technically an area with no sovereignty) and a bunch of other places.
All those places are on the list because it makes things easier for the FedEx people or whoever needs to do business there. Besides, if you go a travel agent and ask for a vacation in France, you don't want a plane ticket to French Guiana in South America, even though technically it's part of France in the same way that Hawaii is part of the US.

Hong Kong is a Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China.
It used to be a British colony until their lease expired in 1997.

HK is now a territory of China, but not yet fully integrated into China.
Till 1999 it was British territory as per an old treaty between China and Britain. HK now has it's own political, legal, and education system but it will be under complete chinese control by 2049. That was part of the deal between UK and China perhaps..
