Gimp: How do you make an image a png without deleting the transparent layer?

To upload an image to this site the picture can't have a background so I made a transparent background on gimp, however the image also has to be a png to upload it and when I make it a png it takes away the transparent background. What do I do? I know there must be a way because I made a thing like this before but I don't know how I did it.

If the image you made in GIMP has a transparent background, then when you export it as PNG the transparency is preserved. Remember PNG images do not support layers, so if your edit originally had multiple layers, when you export it as PNG and you open it again in GIMP - it will have only one layer (with the alpha transparency in it).

If you want to preserve multiple layers, you'll need to save an XCF file - GIMP's native file format - using File > Save As

This has nothing to do with GIMP, it's about the file format itself - PNG images don't support layers.
