How do I find the answer?

An oil spill of 4399 cubic centimeters is spilled onto a pond and spreads out in a circular shape having a diameter of 536 centimeters. Approximate the thickness of the oil film to four decimal places.

    Coma's right.

    4399 = pi * r^2 * h

    r = 536/2 = 268

    4399 = pi * 268^2 * h

    h = 4399 / (pi * 268^2)

    h = 0.01949550553189038711426040529839

    0.0195 cm

    Use the formula for the volume of a cylinder. The height h being the thickness:

    V = (pi)(r^2)(h)

    r = d/2 = 268cm

    call pi 3.1416

    4399cm^3 = 3.1416(268^2cm^2)h

    4399cm^3 = 225,642cm^2h

    h = 4399/225,642 = 0.0195cm or 0.1950mm (take your pick)

    thickness of the oil film.

    They want you to assume that pi*R^2*thickness = 4399 cm^3.

    It is absurd to suppose that that assumption will be accurate to four decimal places but, oh well, this is in the "math" section, not the "reality" section...

    Thickness = (4399 cm^3)/[pi*(268 cm)^2] = 0.0195 cm

    ...and even the instructions are silly, because if I said "195 microns," they'd still want 4 decimal places, and I'd have to write "194.9551 microns" (insane)...it's not your fault, but I think your teacher is a moron.

    The volume divided by the area gives the thickness.

    4399 / (π*536²)

    Okay, first find the circumference of the circle, then you would need to find the height of the cylinder, find the formula for area of a circle, you want the total area to equal 4399, with one dimension of the cylinder, you should be able to plug in numbers into the formula and find it... I could be completely wrong, but I believe this is right, though I have no idea, I am only in 8th grade....

    Volume of oil on pond = pi*[(536/2)^2]*t

    t = thickness of oil

    4399 = *pi*[(268)^2]*t

    4399 = 225641.75*t

    t = 0.0194955 cm

    t (rounded) = 0.0195

    If thickness is 't' then

    4399 =π(d/2)²t

    →t = 4399/{π(268)²}=0.019495 cm=0.1950 mm apprx.
