Are the US Border Agents at the Quebec-US border bilingual?

I would think that the Canadian border guards are bilingual when entering the country, but are the US agents bilingual as well? Or do most of them speak only English?

You might luck out and find one who's picked up some French, but the US agents speak English.

I go through preclearance at the Montreal airport and don't remember any US agents who speak French there, either.

Going the other way, the Canadian lanes are clearly marked with the language(s) spoken.

Not all Canadian border guards are bilingual.

If a port of entry (usually its in Quebec) is designated French/English, then the staff should all be bilingual.

Other ports in other provinces have some officers who speak both languages but most won't.

US agents aren't obliged to speak French. English is their primary & often only language.

On their southern border, many do speak Spanish.

They MIGHT have a few French speakers on every shift but for the most part the only real bilingualism with their border guards would be of the English/Spanish variety.

Some US Border Agents speak more than One language.

Some Canadian Border Officials are Bilingual. Some speak only English and others only French.

Arrangements can be made for the service in language of choice. It may involve a wait for an Officer that speaks the other language.

French speakers are not hard to find in the state of Maine.

    Madawaska, Maine (pop. 4,534) – 84% French-speaking

    Fort Kent, Maine (pop. 4,233) – 61% French-speaking

    Van Buren, Maine (pop. 2,631) – 79% French-speaking

    Frenchville, Maine (pop. 1,225) – 80% French-speaking

ed, the US agents not necessarily, I have come across three in my time that were bilingual. As for the Canadian Boarder agents, yes they are bilingual.
