Hate Crosby when he plays for the pens but cheer when he plays for canada?
Does it make sense to hate Crosby when he plays for the penguins, but cheer for him when he plays for canada in the Olympics? To me it's stupid

Nope. When a guy who is arguably the best player in the world plays for a team that isn't your favorite, of course you aren't going to cheer for him. When he plays for the best team in the world, obviously we want TC to win and he is a big reason we will or won't.

I'm a Penguins fan even though i'm Canadian, I like the Penguins for two reasons.. mainly because there is no NHL team where I live and Crosby is clearly Canada's best player.

Sure. Unless you have some reason to be a personal fan of Crosby, you are just a fan of what he does for the team you support. If you don't support the Penguins, then you dislike that he helps them, and if you support Team Canada you like what he does for them.
Makes sense to me.

I have reasons to dislike the Penguins,
but Crosby is a great player - I respect and admire him as a player,
That doesn't mean I like him as a person, or want his national team to win gold.

It makes sense. I don't like Crosby very much but when he plays for my country I cheer for him for the sake of my country. Obviously I would have rather someone else on Canada score that OT goal in 2010 but I was still happy that Canada scored.

To me it does. Nhl fans are tough on players a lot of the time because of the fact that they do certain things to annoy you. People despite the fact Crosby doesn't like getting into dirty areas of the rink and hating the fact that he wines. But at the end of the day he's representing your nation the least you could do is respect him

It's not just Crosby. Kesler is much more popular as Captain America than he is as a Canuck.

It's Canadian pride. Nobody would want to root for a player who plays for a major rival or a strong opponent.
