If I buy a straighttalk phone that "won't work" in my area what exactly would happen?

I want to purcahse the Motorola Defy in the 62948 zip code, but it says at walmart.com that the phone isn't compatible with the area? Could I still buy the phone and still get coverage, and service?

Update:

I recall a couple months back from a forum that someone said they purchased a phone that wasn't for their zip code and it still worked fine..

Well if it doesn't work in that zip code, that means you will still be able to buy it because nothing is stopping you, but you wouldn't be able to get any coverage or talk and text, so it may be a waste of money.
