What is the reason for a motherboard short-circuit?

My motherboard got short circuited for some reason. I am going to replace my motherboard. What is the reason for this sort-circuit? Because when i replace my motherboard i don't want the new one short circuited all over again.

Could it have been a problem in the software that i use? that make the motherboard short circuit? I have Win 8.1 and i pressed the update windows, it asked for a restart and when I restarted it, it showed performing updates, then my computer went off and the motherboard has shorted out.

Also I want to know how i can determine whether my processor is still good ?

Update:

I am sure it is a motherboard problem because if it was a software problem it would have at least gotten to the BIOS and that didn't happen plus the technician said it was a motherboard short.

Well I don't know of a program causing a short! Shorts are mechanical, Programs are not mechanical devices. If anything, I would say the PSU is bad...or...a stick of ram died. In 20 years of working on hundreds of machines I cant remember having more than two or three "bad" mother boards! If it was a short you would smell it and see the burn mark on the board. "Shorts" occur when two opposing polarity's come in contact with each other. More than likely something died just as you were doing an update. Windows 8.0 and 8.1 is certainly NOT the best ideas Microsoft every came up with! they rank right up there with ME and Vista! It could be the software did some thing "unexpected" like delete drives and not install the right ones. I would check the PSU, then ram, first before investing in a new mother board.
