How can I find a Brown Recluse?
Living in the Houston area, in the Brown Recluse Spider's range, I have not seen any sign whatsoever of a brown recluse. I've flipped rocks, peeled bark, flipped logs, looked in crevices, etc. Also, Houston does not have any naturally occurring rocks, and all that shows up on the surface is topsoil and various rock piles from construction projects. Does anybody know a place or a technique that I can use to finally encounter one of these spiders?
I think the issue is more about location. For example, there are no scorpions whatsoever here, but a mere 50 miles Northwest you can find scorpions aplenty.
I am fully aware of the fact that these recluse spiders are indeed reclusive, as their name suggests. Strange, the only thing that creates those woodlouse carcass mounds are the steatoda triangulosa that are so numerous here, no sign of recluses or woodlouse hunters anywhere. I still think its about the location. Does an anyone know of a place near Houston that for sure has recluses?

Steven,
Since our friend Sam wants you to believe that
Brown Recluse spiders are six-gun toting aggressive
bad guys, and that he got this nonsense from some-
thing or other - pedia, please allow me to give you
an adjunct to Sam's wisdom:
Brown Recluse spiders are just that: recluses.
Do you have a rocker-recliner, or some other piece
of furniture that can be turned on it's side ?
Look under there. Have your container ready, because
they do not like to be around Human Beings.
A Brown Recluse is a temperate zone fellow.
His totally favorite food is the the common mini-
crustacean, the "Roly-Poly" pill bug. If you ever
see the dried husks of little pill bugs, you'll know
that there are, or have been, Brown Recluse on your
premises.
The Brown Recluse is a guy that will migrate, at
night, looking for
a: FOOD
b: a MATE
They don't target people to envenomate. Their venom
is precious.
What happens, is, they cause people to slap them, or
otherwise mess with them as they travel across people
when migrating. So, they bite. They have fangs. and
their bite causes a number of medical symptoms,
include a hot, itchy, wound, with visible fang marks.
Sometimes after the bite, an hour, to eight hours, the
bite will develop a painful lump under the skin. There
might be nausea, fever, dizziness, malaise, flu-like
symptoms, and shaky nervous type of symptoms
Also, their venom can raise blood pressure, to dangerous
levels. You treat the bite of Brown Recluse spiders with
antibiotics, like Keflex, Doxycycline, and others, and with
antiinflammatory drugs like Prednisone, and Methyl Prednisolone.
In very small children, sometimes shock is a result.
Different varieties of Brown Recluse have venoms of
different toxicity.
Brown Recluse are known to be aggressive only when
a female is protecting an egg sac.

Well first before I tell you where they would be hiding I would feel bad if I didn't warn you that these spiders are recluse they are aggressive in nature and have pretty potent venom and they are usually in numbers. Recluse tend to make their webs in more human made habitats they tend to have lairs in dry places that are usually undisturbed cellars, sheds, piles of junk in your garage or a closet, usually though when you have them in your yard I would check a fire wood pile if you have it that is a good place to find them. Again these are dangerous spiders.
Oh ok, well I just googled it and there are stories of recluse attacks in houston and there are a good number of pest control agencies that protect from recluse, I'm not really an expert but it is probably because the scorpions live in remote dessert areas, and they aren't like recluse, the recluse can hide and be undetected, but especially you being from that area it is hard not to spot a scorpion so the more populated areas probably killed off the population of the scorpions.
