How could I film this movie scene?

Here's what I envision.

The main character, Arthur, lives in a house on a river. He's out mowing his lawn, and a small speedboat cruises by his house. One of the boat's occupants starts firing a machine gun at Arthur, and he hits the dirt. The boat comes close to shore, and the shooter jumps out to confirm his kill. Arthur then draws a pistol from his waistband and blasts the shooter. The boat's driver takes off before Arthur has a chance to cap him.

How could I simulate the gunfire without disturbing the neighbors around where I expect to film this?

you could just let them know for that particular time you will shoot the scene if its ok with them that there is going to be a little bit noise(get theyre permission) or if that is impossible just shoot the video with the guns and all that and then add the gunfire sound while you edit the video on the computer..hope i helped
