I'm moving to Birmingham, AL soon. Any suggestions on fun things to do there?

Also, any suggestions on best/worst areas to look for a place to live (aside from downtown)?

You'll want to live in Shelby County. It has better schools (except for Hoover), and Jefferson County has an enormous sewer debt that they passed on to the residents. JeffCo is a mess.
Depending on your budget and desired commute: Oak Mountain area, Pelham, Alabaster, Helena. All south of I-459.
Fun stuff to do--Civil Rights Institute, Southern Museum of Flight, Barber Motor Sports Museum, Mc Wane Center.
