Asus, and Gigabyte both make decent boards. Depends on what role you want the machine to play, as to what type of processor type to choose from as well as expansion slots.
Example you can build a budget rig using a FM2 mainboard with a decent AMD APU for general use to light gaming. Up to a I7 with a dedicated video card for Gaming etc. Choose your case carefully as well as that will also make or break you in regards to what you can install.

It really depends on whether you want Intel or AMD, and what other components and expectations you have for this build. The actual processor plays a huge role in this.
