My cat can barely breathe from nasal congestion?
My cat is 17 and has run into some health problems. It seems like he has allergies or something. His nose is almost always full of boogers and snot. He's usually sneezing and getting it all over the place. His nose does clear on its own and he's perfectly fine and happy. We have taken him to the vet and they prescribed medicine to put into his food. But this animal is not dumb, he refuses to touch his food when we'd put it in there and that's saying a lot because he LOVES food and loves to eat. When that didn't work we got a medicine shot for him and it seemed to work but we can't keep going back to get shots all the time. It's very expensive. Regardless, I'm writing this at 5:00 in the morning because he woke me up because he can barely breathe. I feel so bad his nose is covered with snot. What can I do for him?

If the nose is covered with discharge then gently wipe with a moistened towel. If a cat can't smell the food he will usually not eat the food. You can try to place him in a small area bathroom and run the shower or hot water from the faucet which causes a lot of steam. This will help with the mucous buildup and make it easier to breathe. Your vet may also have you go to the store and purchase pediatric generic nose drops to be placed 1 drop in alternating nostrils every so many hours. I have a cat that has very narrow nasal passages and he had a cold once where he could hardly breathe. It was so hard to hear him (other end of the house) and he was miserable but it helped a lot!
Check with your vet on this. Medication may be needed - orally - for an upper respiratory infection and it usually doesn't work putting anything in food - as you found out.

The vet might be able to give you a dropper to gently suction the mucous out of his nose?
