Why does Israel exist?

First, since you're British, you should already be familiar with the Balfour Declaration. Lord Balfour wanted help fighting the Ottoman Empire, so he promised BOTH the Israelis and the Palestinians a homeland. He didn't come through. After WWII, when the world realized what Hitler had done to the Jews, they felt guilty, so they created Israel.

Because the victors of 2 world wars over the Nazi supporting Arab nations decided that is the way it will be.

An Israeli 1900 year old claim to the land may be a stretch but making up a nationality called Palestinian and a country called Palestine and then filling it up with terrorist does nothing to take away from the fact that the current owners of the land are much better caretakers.

Well, I think "Super Java" gave a good reason for the founding for the Israeli nation. But also, I think that after a period of time, the origininal "reason" for a country's existance becomes irrelevant. It's just there; it was there yesterday; and lord willing, it'll be there tomorrow. Does anybody ask why Italy or Argentina exists?

No one wanted the Jews left over at the end of WW2 and it was thought that Israel couldn't exist and would soon be overrun by Arabs and the whole 'problem' would be over and done with.
