Can I change my gamer tag on Xbox Live without losing my data?

I want to change my gamer tag on my Xbox 360 and I see where it gives me the option to do so. However, I want to know if this is going to have a negative effect on my saves and achievements. Can I change my tag without losing all of my game data?

    You need to pay to change it but you will not lose data

    All that stuff will follow on to your new gamertag when you pay to change it.
