I wonder how long dogs can live?

We tried to push the envelope seeing what excellent care could do for a dog's life expectancy. We fed our beautiful, loving, standard poodle the best dog food we could afford with no grains, just proteins, veggies, blueberries, etc. We wondered how long we could keep our beautiful baby alive with regular trips to the vet, exercise, good food and love. But the tears are welling in my eyes, now he's four, and just diagnosed with autoimmune disease. I'm heartbroken that nobody has even breathed a word that this could happen. I thought he was slowing down from his puppyhood but no! it's an inherited disease that's making my exuberant baby so listless. And there's no real cure. Just a lifetime of meds and maybe chemo if it goes to the bone marrow. Does anyone know anymore or have a miracle cure? Or just what to do?

Update:

Thank you guys. Yes, I know the average life span, should have made that clear. But I'm asking if anyone has had their dogs live longer than that with a more natural diet than supermarket dog food.

Update 2:

@Helen, it's an autoimmune disease like SLE, affecting organs, skin, etc. So far his kidneys are fine, his liver, too. But his blood count is askew. That why the vet's thinking maybe bone marrow disease (cancer).

Which disease is it? Maybe someone here has had experience with it.

There are lots of diseases and conditions that can affect any dog. Many have tests that can be done on breeding stock, but many don't. Just like with humans, there is no guarantee that something won't go wrong even with people who live healthy lifestyles.
