If I have a spell that works at range, does it also work in melee in Pathfinder 3.5?

Okay, I have several spells that say 25 feet plus 5 feet per level. Can these only be used like a ranged weapon or can I use them to attack a monster that I am in melee with? The spell says range touch attack. Do I need a touch attack spell that works only by touching the enemy? Also, when dose the monster get a attack of opportunity if any if the spell works in 1 standard action? If it works instantaneously and I am attacking a monster right in front of me, does it get to attack me first?

Yes you can use the spell in melee. There are one major disadvantage for doing so.

'Ranged touch attack' means you are basically making a touch attack that can occur at range. This is resolved just like a normal touch attack with two major differences:

    1. A ranged touch attack fired in while an enemy is threatening you *always* provokes an attack of opportunity, even if you cast the spell defensively. In theory, this means not casting a ranged touch attack spell defensively could provoke two attacks of opportunity, one for the spell casting, one for the ranged attack, but most DMs won't handle it that way.

    2. Ranged touch attacks that miss are expended. A normal touch attack is not expended on a miss, and on your next round you can attempt the touch again as a standard action as long as you don't cast another spell.

Note that with all touch attacks that a natural 1 on the dice is an automatic miss, while a natural 20 threatens a critical hit as per normal weapons.

If you provoke an opportunity attack with a spell the attacker attacks *before* your spell is cast. This is regardless of the casting time of the spell. If the attack hits, you will be forced to make a concentration check of (DC 10 + points of damage taken + the spell's level). Against this you will roll a d20 + your caster level + the modifier of your caster stat.
