is there a word for knowledge increasing from one generation to the next?

Im thinking there has to be a word, or phrase, that encapsulates the process of building knowledge over time as a species.

Any ideas?

    Evolution? That would work for many things over generation... Not really just the word but maybe saying "evolution of knowledge"? Idk.
