Why do Jews & Christians pick and choose which parts of the Bible apply?

Particularly those who are against gay marriage, and who use the Bible to claim that God is against it. I've heard half hearted explanations about how 'parts of the Old Testament' no longer apply, and that 'those rules were only for Jews in the first place'.

Can anyone clear this up for me?

Examples of ignored passages include:

'Consecrate yourselves therefore, and be holy; for I am the Lord your God. Keep my statutes, and observe them; I am the Lord; I sanctify you.

All who curse father or mother shall be put to death; having cursed father or mother, their blood is upon them.

If a man commits adultery with the wife of his neighbour, both the adulterer and the adulteress shall be put to death. The man who lies with his father's wife has uncovered his father's nakedness; both of them shall be put to death; their blood is upon them.

If a man lies with his daughter-in-law, both of them shall be put to death; they have committed perversion; their blood is upon them.

In all seriousness, how do you decide which rules you should live by and which ones you shouldn't? Who tells you that? Did God just change his mind and decide that killing half the population was a bad idea after all?

Hoping for some real answers here please.

I didn't mention muslims because I know literally nothing about the faith or their holy book, so it would be wrong of me to accuse them of cherry picking when I don't know this.

@Esther, I mentioned homosexuality as that seems to be the sin that is upheld today, whereas for example, hitting your mother or father does not warrant the same level of intolerance as being gay does. I want to know why this is.

@Clouds - you have completely missed the point haven't you? It is not 'my Bible'. I'm agnostic. I'm assuming everyone knows the parts of the Bible that tell us gays are an abomination and should be put to death. I'm asking WHY there is still so much hatred for gay people, but not for the other examples above. I don't care about 'ancient history' - I know enough about the progression of social attitudes towards homosexuality throughout history (would it surprise you to know that bisexual

    This is a great question.

    The Old Testament Laws are under the mosaic law system, which includes sacrificing animals etc. Christians are not under the Mosaic law. People were unable to be saved by following the Mosaic Law, this is why it too Christ's death to fulfill the requirements of the law. We are saved by grace, not by works. The Israelites were to be distinguished as a holy nation, this is why they killed people to purge the evil from their midst. Today Christians do not separate themselves as a nation, but exist as lambs among wolves.

    However, faith in Christ demands that we turn from sin. Homosexuality is sinfull and is so classified in the new testament as well as the old. However, It is important to recognize that gossip, lying, slander, adultery, etc. are just as must sin as homo sexuality, Homosexuality is no worse. We are all sinners (including Christians) and fall short of the Glory of God. However, it is important that when we sin we repent and turn from the sin. In this way, we show that Christ is Lord. What fellowship should light have with darkness.

    I could resist but I don't think it would be right, to resist call you an immoral stupid clod. For the very fact that something is Bible is an act of authority. Those passages were all in non-Biblical books but were part of the teaching and day-to-day life of the followers of Moses. The abomination of homosexuality existed for CENTURIES before it shows up in any 'Bible'. Just as you would point to sources not condemning homosexuality (and make that your 'Bible') so too when you argue from the Bible you are already deciding about authority.

    But Socrates acted on reason alone when he called homosexuality disgusting and immoral:

    SOCRATES: And here, Callicles, I would have you consider how you would reply if consequences are pressed upon you, especially if in the last resort you are asked, whether the life of a catamite is not terrible, foul, miserable? Or would you venture to say, that they too are happy, if they only get enough of what they want?

    Accept for the verse you quoted in Timothy, all your quotes are from the law of Moses. I don't know about Jews and Muslims, but for a Christian, these laws do not apply.

    Now wait.

    First and foremost, Jesus said He came to fulfill the law. (Matthew 5:17) The law was fulfilled on the Cross.

    The Books of Galatians, Hebrews, and Romans make this abundantly clear. Hebrews chapter 10 for instance.

    Some Christians who have not been taught well by their pastors, will quote the law to condemn same sex relations. This is unnecessary as the New Testament does it for us. (Romans 1, Jude 1, etc)

    The law was fulfilled and we don't follow it (Romans 10:4)

    The rest of the Old Testament was written for our learning. (Romans 15:4)

    Spinelli: Your using half scripture & combining it with the Quran & other things, and your combining old testament with New. This is Yahoo, so space is limited. I can't write 23 Pgs. here. So here's the basic drift.

    Lev. 18:22- 20:13. You shall not lie with a male as with a woman. It is an abomination. If a man lies with a male as with a woman both of them have committed an Abomination. they shall be put to death . There blood is upon them.

    --What that is referencing is Damnation & its their/your, fault & choice.

    Gen. 19:13 - Ezek. 16:50 - Lev. 18:22-20:13 - 1 Cor. 6:9-10 - Rom. 1:26-28-32.

    and those who support this evil,-- Rom 1:26-28-32 " They not only do them, but Approve, those who practice them "- St. Paul warns very clearly throughput Scripture about homosexuality and what will befall all those who participate.

    Spelled out pretty clearly

    Old testament, Torah old Jewish law. Law of Moses was given by God as a "second chance" as it were. It's very hard for Modern man to conceptualize life in that time. It was brutal & hard. OUR mindsets & thought process's have changed. If you were to go back in time to that era your chances of survival are extremely low. Your mind cant operate at that level any more.

    In extreme brief.

    Genesis. WE, broke the law of God initially, Moses was given the task to save the Jewish people, & reapply Gods law.

    Then Christ came to us as a third opportunity. Christ's coming was Gods Second covenant with us so that all of us wont be damned, which at that time we were .

    Try to look at it as Christ was the second " Adam"

    The Holy mother Mary as the second " Eve", though not as a wife but as a mother to all of us. There sacrifice was for us, so that as a people we wont be lost.

    Here's the Rub, even now the majority of us Christians included, will not go instantly to Heaven. We have to be held in account for our life & our deeds, every utterance, every action, every deed. penance ( restitution if you will) have to be made if you follow the original teachings of Christ (Jewish /Christian movement under St. Peter leadership )

    -John 21:15-17 & Matthew 16:17-20-

    Which is now called the catholic Faith almost all of us will go into purgatory, kinda like a cleaning up place before we go before God. penance can be made for most things right here on earth through prayer & sacrifice.

    So maybe a class in Theology, or/and Bible class or RICA class in the Catholic faith may help you.

    One thing that is seamless in both OT and the NT is that sin has not been redefined.The law of Moses was given to Israelites to govern them as a chosen people for God.

    This is a difficult subject to be explained here you can start by reading Romans and Hebrews,which give explanations our relationship with the law of Moses as Christians.In the NT also homosexuality is a sin as well.

    Because so many of them are false. God is love and justice. Any teaching unloving or unjust never came from God. It came from dishonest scribes as Jeremiah clearly states. There is no mystery. We all know what is right and loving.

    The moral code is summed up in ten commands.The 66 diverse books of the bible cover a very wide sweep of history and cultural change.Today we see the direction our society is taking by ignoring or opposing the Perfect natural design of man and woman. Every one of us is corrupted into compromising the family by marital confusion and therefore inviting desease and psychological schisms. We deviate from Gods holy laws at our peril. All homosexual societies destroy themselves and get taken over by stronger nations.

    Simple: follow the way prepared for you. "I AM the Way, the Truth and the Love; no one comes to the Father BUT through me." When in doubt, follow Him.

    Every case you mentioned, when seen with His Light, He also showed a Way to navigate yout decision making process.

    I believe those who sin pay the price in the here and now.

    (cigarette smokers get lung cancer. . Many of the Rock

    stars who were on drugs, died of drug use early in life. At the

    onset of homosexual activities came the disease Aids.) Jesus

    told of the importance of loving God with all your heart, all

    your soul; and loving your neighbor as yourself. We need to

    think on those things. The repercussions of sinful activities

    will manify itself, as I've stated, without Christians and others

    picking and choosing Bible scriptures to argue about.
