The A10 has more cores than the i3, it has a stronger, one of the best, integrated graphics solutions available today. It is also clocked higher per core.
There is a thing called IPC, that is, instructions per cycle. It is rarely listed, but Intel typically has a higher IPC. In simple terms, it can do more with it's gigahertz than the AMD alternatives tend to do. Unfortunately, in the case of the i3, that doesn't matter becuase the AMD has a significant core, graphics and clock speed advantage.
Reasons to get the Intel over the AMD then? The Intel has a lower TDP, this means that it uses less power. This has numerous benefits for laptops including a longer battery life. The term Ultrabook is an Intel only term, you can get a core i3 ultrabook, but not an AMD ultrabook.
So, what should you get? In this case the winner is definitely the AMD alternative unless the slim, portable and energy efficient i3 alternative is a major concern for you

I would go for the AMD A10 APU. It has more cores and Integrated graphics, so even mid range gaming is possible on it. And 2.5 Ghz is pretty fast. You will chug a little on 1.8 GHz.
Ive seen even lower AMD APUs run games like Assassin's Creed 2 pretty well at reduced resolutions and settings. Not so much on Intel low end CPUs.
