Question about the film '12 years a slave'?
One slave in the film picked 500 pounds of cotton a day. Really? 500 pounds? Cotton doesn't weigh much and even if you're in the fields picking all day, 500 sounds exaggerrated.

that's exactly what the movie is trying to show that slaves had to pick huge amount of cotton otherwise they were whipped. Patsy was the only one who collected large amt. rest collected fairly average. And its also possible that she thought may be Fassbender's character (Epps ?) would not sexually assault her if she continues to do hard work. When she was whipped just because she was absent for a while to get soap she herself said that she collected 500 pounds cotton whole day and she at least deserve a good bath because she was completely exhausted from her work.
Source(s): Fassbender was the highlight for me in this movie. Chiwetal and Lupita were amazing too but Fassbender was just brilliant. - ?Lv 77 years ago
I have not seen the film yet, but picking that much cotton sounds about right. The slaves would be in the fields picking cotton from early in the morning to very late at night, they could not stop work during the day otherwise they would be beaten. So I imagine that they would pick a lot of cotton.

It's hot and the trees not so high, so you're bending most of the time. And a sack of cotton can weigh a lot.
