CD player skipping/makes CDs sound scratched?

My Pure DMX-20 DAB/CD player has developed a fault. Initially it would fail to read CDs and for a while it wasn't used.

I've recently tried again and the problem was far worse and skipped most of the time. Anyway, I've cleaned the lens using isopropyl and a cotton bud. I've also taken it apart and cleaned and re-greased the gears and the cd sled with ceramic grease.

This has fixed 95% of the problem but every couple of songs or so it will sound like a vinyl record with a scratch. Either that or it will completely lose where it's up to and restart.

Is there anything else you can suggest or is it time to give up?

You have done everything anyone can do. If your confident doing that sort of thing I would consider changing the CD mech if you can source one. The problem will be a timing fault to do with the mech or laser starting to fail. They both come together in a replacement mechanism. A good place to source parts in the UK is HRS. The mechs are fairly generic one will fit many models.
