Why can't we call people black but can call people white?

It's just a pain when I think of it. Like I have to say African American to a black person which I could be able to do, but to another country and then call them English if I am in the UK and they are black, at some point I would think it would get ridiculous. On the other hand, people can just say white and not have to get so specific that in modern society it's non sense. Now I know white means: good, light, etc. And black means: death, evil, etc. But I don't think that is the only reason. So what are the reasons, was there some guy who had to ruin it for everyone, or what?

Update:

I brought this up because (story time) I was sent to the principle's office because a guy complained that for me to identify him I called him black. So my friend asked who Alex was and I said, "That guy over there *pointed*. Then she said, "Which one?" I replied, " The black one." He must have over heard perhaps had a bad day, or having racial problems. But the big deal was the fact that my principal had the nerve to tell me she'll let me off with a warning.

Update 2:

I live in the United States Melissa lol hence the word American in "African American."

I call black people black and white people white all the time. I hear it more than African American(. Which really doesn't make any sense because not all black people are " African American".) Where the hell do you live?!

People call me black and I call myself black. I don't know where you lived and who you've talked to, but most people of African descent in America prefer to be called "black." It's on the census and on most forms that people fill out. I've never heard any black person complaining about it either.

In my opinion it really depends on the person. I prefer to be called black. Some prefer to be called african american. I prefer to be called black because I wasnt born or raised in africa. Some people prefer to be called african american because they feel that their ancestors came from africa so they consider themselves african american.

When referring to race I say black and white. No one seems to have a problem with it. Most of the black people I know use the term black when referring to themselves too, unless they are Haitian or Jamaican.

What do "we" call them? You can say "Black" in the US to refer to a Black person. ("African-American", in fact, in somewhat stilted, and overly PC people use it to refer to a race rather than an ethnicity, so you get these bizarre statements like "he was white, and she was African-American" as opposed to "he was White and she was Black" or "he was Irish-American and she was "African-American".)

You can. Nothing politically incorrect about that.

    Over-sensitivity and political correctness.
