Car question about caliper breaking?
So I hit a pot hole and my caliper broke to the point where I can't brake. My tire and rim are fine. Did the mechanic that I asked to fix my muffler mess with my car? Or is it possible to have a caliper break without the tire or rim or anything else messing up?

Year? Make? Model? It does help in this case. It may be a internal damage to caliper or brake line. Or it can just be age and wear.
It is possible. Did you look at it? Is it the brake line? You need to take the wheel off and inspect it. You might have more damage than thought. You could of damage the strut or shock and that can damage the brake line.

A seal or hose could break causing that without warning, or a weak brake pad could come loose causing a brake lockup. There's a lot of questions here though that would help us understand the situation. Did the brakes stop working just after the pot hole? Does the pedal go to the floor or will a tire not move? How does the mechanic who did a muffler tie into the story line of the issue?

I can't see how a brake caliper could crap out from hitting a pot hole yet leave the tire and rim undamaged. Could you have possibly run over an object in the road (and thought you had hit a pothole) and it flung up and broke the brake line leaving your brakes inoperative?
