Can you do well on the act or sat without taking expensive classes?

I don't want to spend so much on classes but I need to get into Stony Brook. If I buy books and study on my own can i still do decent because all my peers are taking prep classes

Sure. I did the GRE and LSAT through the study books, and did very well on both. The classes might give you some tips and tricks and give you structured times you must study for, but really it's the same material as the books.

Self-teaching does require motivation though. Many things can be self-taught, but many such things fail because we become easily distracted by other things in life.

Yes, I never took a class and got a 31 and a 33 on the ACT.

Yes you can still do well that way but it will require a lot of practice. Your school should provide some form of prep lessons after school or on Saturdays. You should ask your guidance counselor about that.l
