Is Jon Snow now in command if the nights watch?
After watching the finale of the third season of Game of Thrones I thought of something interesting. Now that Jeor Mormont is dead, the Nights Watch is need of a commander. In the first season I remembered that Commander Mormont chose Jon to be his personal steward, so it only makes sense that Jon is now the man to take charge of the Watch. I haven't read the books so I don't know if he really does become the commander or not, I just wanted to know if anyone else is wondering the same thing I am.

The Night's watch choose their own commanders very democratically, you need to get the support of 67% of the men to become lord commander.
*Spoilers* Jon temporarily takes command of the defenses at Castle black to defend against the first attack by the wildlings, but after that they begin voting on a new commander. The commanders of the other castles on the wall are the obvious choices but since the voting is taking place at castle black both of them are voting for all the men they command who all support them. A problem arises when both of them have control of over 1/3 of the votes and neither is willing to give in if it will mean the other winning (they really hate eachother).
At this point it's pretty obvious that neither of them is going to win, but the winner will have to gain the support of both of them. The other candidates are Bowen Marsh, who is head steward at castle black and Janos Slynt who was the commander of the city watch in King's landing until Tyrion sent him to the wall. Bowen Marsh being fairly uninspiring Slynt seems likely to win, which is bad for Jon because Slynt considers him a traitor for joining the wildlings.
When Sam realizes Jon will be executed if nothing changes he takes matters into his own hands, enters Jon's name into the voting and convinces the commanders to support Jon over Slynt and eventually Jon is elected.

In the tv show the Night's Watch is technically without a commander at this point. The title of Lord Commander is an elected one. When there's a vacancy then the brothers of the Watch get together and cast ballots for who shall be the next Lord Commander. The wishes of the previous occupant might have sway in terms of the voting but they are not, in and of themselves, determinative.
