Acer 5741 freezing at random times.?
I have this Acer laptop that was given to me because it would freeze at random times for no reason. So first thing I did was check the ram I swapped out the 2X2Gb sticks there where in it and booted it up still would freeze for no reason. I then updated the BIOS. And again still freezes. I have no idea why it keeps freezing I tried swapping the hard drives out but every time I go to install windows 7, XP, 8, 8.1 It just freezes at different spots some times it will get half way other times it lunches the Installer then stops. It is the Acer 5741-3541 i5 2.4Ghz 320Gb Hard Drive 4Gb Kingston ram Intel graphics. Weird thing is I can install ubuntu and run it.

I am no expert but that sounds like the processor is overheating, so maybe if you took the back off, and then remove the long copper tube thing in there and scrape off the old heat sink goop (whatever its called) and add new goop to it and put the tube back in, then the tube thing can cool off the processor. And the fan might be full of fur or something so its not cooling enough inside, so you could clean that out. I did all this, plus got a laptop cooling platform thing (whatever its called) and now there is no whirring sound, the touchpad is no longer hot to the touch, and things seem a bit better somehow. The heatsink goop stuff isn't very much, and the old goop might have crack off or something so its not cooling the right way. I have an Acer but kind of old by laptop standards.
