Can you see Polaris from Chimborazo?

If you were at sea level, you couldn't, but maybe the horizon is expanded enough by the elevation.

    According to Wikipedia, the Chimborazo volcano is located at latitude 01° 28' S. Because of atmospheric refraction, Polaris probably could still be seen, but it would require perfectly clear skies for hundreds of kilometres to the north.

    In a similar sort of observation, some friends of mine managed to observe the globular star cluster Omega Centauri from the north shore Lake Erie a few years ago. Omega Centauri was technically below the horizon, but they saw it because of atmospheric refraction and perfectly clear skies for hundreds of kilometres.

    The data for the peak 'Chimborazo' :

    01° 28’ 09” S / 78° 49‘ 03“ W, 20564 feet (6268m).

    1. The peak is 1° 28’ 09” (= 1°.469), South of the Equator.

    2. Its elevation (h) 6268m +MSL confers an advantage that its horizon is at a depression angle, θ, as

    h = R(Sec θ - 1) ,

    6.268km = 6378.1(Sec θ - 1),

    Sec θ = 1+(6.268/6378.1) = 1.0009827,

    θ = 2° 32’ 20¾”

    Conclusion: As the depression is more than what would be needed to bring the N.Pole on horizon by

    1° 28’ 09” - 2° 32’ 20¾”= - 1° 04’ 11¼”,

    that the N.Pole would be above the horizon, it implies. Though there is an "If", the northern horizon (the line of sight to it) is uncluttered by any structures or rises in between. That is not the case here. Andes being aligned north-south here, denies this comparable "advantage" (- 1° 04’ 11¼”) the north horizon has (other factors not withstanding).

    N.Pole can't be viewed as the N.horizon (Az=0°) is not clear, as viewed from Chimborazo.
