When you fight authority, who always wins?

I worked with a guy once who said he could only listen to old-school Mellencamp, because (as he put it) "he had the "Cougar" but then he dropped it" so he lost all respect for him as an artist.

BQ; What do you think of people that have a hyphenated last name and use it, then drop it later in life?

Update:

((Yesmar))) and I was worried that most of the users here wouldn't get MY reference.

Update 2:

((Occulty)) I'll bet you wish you had Cougar thrown at you by a record company ;-)

So now not only have you dropped thought, you've taken up other people's trite hackneyed out-of-date crap. John Cougar is 60 if he's a day. And off the charts for longer than Ringo Starr.

The "Cougar" was something that Mellencamp's record company threw on him without telling him, and he despised it. As soon as he had enough power to drop it without hurting himself financially, he ditched it.

"That (name) was put on me by some manager. I went to New York and everybody said, 'You sound like a hillbilly.' And I said, 'Well, I am.' So that's where he came up with that name. I was totally unaware of it until it showed up on the album jacket. When I objected it to it, he said, 'Well, either you're going to go for it, or we’re not going to put the record out.' So that was what I had to do... but I thought the name was pretty silly." from Wikipedia.

    While extremely complicated...

It often comes down to who's more clever.

Sure, most "bad guys" get caught...

But most "bad guys" are also stupid.

    PS:

The cleverness I mention often takes the form of stealth, misdirection, and general confusion... what the guy below alluded to. He's correct in that it's not direct opposition.

I have learned not to fight authority. If you need to beat it, you confuse it, buy it or become the authority yourself.
