Unfortunately, yes. You must be a playstation plus member to play online. But with that, the customer service will be a lot better than they were with the ps3. If you don't have ps plus, you can still play story mode. Also if you go to the playstation store, there are tons of free games that were better than the ps3 free games. The free games on ps4 do not require ps plus to play online because the game are pretty much online based. You can ge one of the best games ghat were on the computer such as. Black light Retribution (FPS) game where you can make a custom weapon), Planetside 2, a sci fi game (FPS)with an out war! 3 races, each race gets their own chill base just to hang around and do whatever I think. Also in planetside 2 either its 64 vs 64 or over 100. Then there's war frame, a sci fi shooter (3PS) Which i have aged for a little bit but it seems like a ninja like person with a gun and sword.

Yes we now have to pay for online but if you like the 360 online better than the ps3 online than expect the ps4 online to now match and beat it since the only reason the 360 online is better than the ps3 online is because people were paying for online and Microsoft was useing that money to better their online experiences now that Sony is chargeing you can expect the same and even better online experience plus PS+ is way better then Xbox live since Xbox live only give old games while PS+ fives new games plus discounts and early access to betas. Also Sony will not force drm on the ps4 like Microsoft is doing the Xbox one but it is up to the third party publishers but my belief is that Sony won't allow them to go any furthur than letting them put online passes back into play on used games especially after Sony said their will be no drm also me and most people prefer a $10 online over completely having our rights taken away like Microsoft want to do so expect online passes to be on the ps4.

The new consoles are more of a nuisance than the previous generation(PS3, Xbox 360, etc). Microsoft and Sony want your money, putting a price tag on everything and minimally releasing free games and such so they can look "equal" about everything they release. What you get for paying the price of a console and membership? 32-player servers, limited memory space, and more items that you want but with a price tag.
Overall, just get a new PC that will last you for years. You will mostly pay for the Internet bill alone because there are so many free games on the PC thanks to Steam and other PC video game services. Like Nicholas said, "planetside 2 either its 64 vs 64 or over 100." Console fanboys are going to say, "PC is too much". No it isn't, paying membership for Playstation or Xbox One also adds up over time AND there is a bountiful amount of player-made mods/extensions like skins for Minecraft or game modes for Garry's Mod. Many computers being released right now are more powerful than the Playstation 4 or Xbox One. No one has ever heard of a console with 1 Terabyte. "Why do I need 1 Terabyte for?" Terabyte is the new standard as we progress from Gigabytes to Terabytes.

Play station network and play station plus are now worki in terms of subscription and online play similar to Xbox live silver and gold. Regular Play station network, that they made free to try to make it seem better than xbox live, will get you close to nothing but being connected to the internet. All the stuff that play station does that's any good, they require you to have playstation plus, such as playing games online or playing the free games each month, but unlike xbox live, when you stop paying for ps+, they snatch that all away from you, including your "free" games. Nothing is really free anymore. If you are ok with crap, they just make you pay $400 for the thing. If you want to use the good features, you pay even more. Simple as that no matter how annoying it is.
