Booze or no booze , would inventions have come without ?

If there had been no booze in the west , originally monks I hear , would there have been no lamp light fuel , no petrol from distillation of whiskey etc.

and were the federal bureau of investigation too dozy to nick Al Capone* , not Qaeda , when he was the chief pimp / culprit in evading the prohibition of alcohol in the US ?

*apparently only busted on tax evasion !
