I wonder who owns all those steep hillsides where these fires seem to pop up?
I honestly thought there was a law that property owners had to keep the brush cut down to avoid those fires. Isn't that right ?Does most of that property belong to a government entity ?
BTW- Thanks to DR, OM, Cope, Mark, Slick Ric for responding to my last question a week or so ago. You guys ROCK.

John's right. The last one was in a national forest, so all the Obama haters can blame him for something else.
Not sure about the rules in Glendora, but I know if I lived there against the hills, I'd build my own fire suppression system onto my property. And I'd set my own backfires.
The City of LA, however, is SERIOUS about fire control. They usually send out inspectors in the spring to look at the hillsides, then they send a notice to property owners to clear brush away. If they don't respond, the city sends out a crew to clear it out, then sends a hefty bill.
Glendale is pretty tough, too.
But to answer your question, most of these fires start on public land owned by the county.

The last fire started in the Angeles National Forest so it is owned by the federal government. It is a forest and we are in a drought you can’t cut everything down and it would not prevent a fire when you have irresponsible people with campfires. In many forests you need to do control burns.

Some area is national park land. Some open space is park land own by individual cities, and some is own privately.

Most of the blame can be directed at arsonist, some of whom have been captured and will be prosecuted to the full exstent of the law...hopefully.....
