Is losing a game of pool because you scratched when you only have the 8-ball left a ridiculous rule?

I like to think of winning and losing in terms of who out-plays the other person. So in a game of pool, you can sink every single ball way before the other person, and then lose by sinking the cue ball?

Does anybody else find this completely absurd? You can totally outperform someone and still lose?

It's only ridiculous if you lose by pocketing the cue ball and the 8 ball remains on the table. That's a bogus bar rule that you'll commonly come across. If you pocket the 8 ball and the cue ball on the same shot, then you committed a foul while pocketing the 8 and you deserve to lose. You don't get style points in 8-ball. You only outperform your opponent by legally pocketing the 8.

It seems ridiculous if you're the one who lost that way.
