What is the actual price of gold.?

Without all these mood swings people seem to been having fluctuating these prices; does gold have an actual dollar value. Is it under priced or over priced.

Like other commodities, gold is worth whatever people will pay for it today, which may be different from what people paid yesterday.

In the U.S., the federal government artificially fixed the price of gold at about $35 per ounce from 1935 until the early 1970s, but the controls were lifted during the Nixon administration.

The most recent price quote I can find is U.S. $1,263.40 per troy ounce.
