Can anyone explain why, when someone asks a question about their homework ...?

... almost always the 'best answer' is chosen by voting, and not by the asker? You would have thought that the asker might be interested in a person who has taken the trouble to help them, and the thank them publicly for their assistance. In fact it seems quite rare for this to happen.

Odd that. Don't you think?

Update:

... and then thank them (sorry for the typo)

You think this only applies to when homework problems are asked?

I think its more profoundly a problem when people ask questions out of their own genuine curiosity, and then fail to show appreciation to those who satisfied that curiosity. Of course, make no mistake, just because someone responds to a question does not mean they actually *answered* the question, and when they do its often times with no conveyance of concept or explanation or technique.

Lets be honest here... people who ask for homework help are not in it for intellectualism, they are in it for a selfish agenda to skate by with good grades and minimal effort. Such mentalities go along quite well with the lack of appreciation they show after the fact.

As a general rule, I dont answer questions that I know to be homework. Or take home tests, etc. Its usually obvious. They will have the final answer but wont have the work. Or it will be multiple choice, fill in the blank, or similar such questions. Or it will conveniently have a diagram in a photo. OR... what I find espeically annoying... the question will refer to a picture or a diagram which the question asker never even posted with the question.... which proves that they copy-pasted the question with absolutely no thought put into what it actually said.

On the one hand my ethics and integrity prevent me from wanting to help people with homework... because they wont learn that way. They dont have an inquisitive enough mind to ask their own questions, do their own research, or even so much as take their classes seriously. But on the other hand, a part of me wants to give them all the answers... to help keep them stupid... securing my own future in the process.

There are many things wrong with YA... sure the community abuses the system, but the adminstrators at Yahoo allow it in the first place. Reports of abuses are completely ignored, first and foremost.

They would rather change the color theme of the site than fix problems of abuse. The same questions get reasked dozens of times in a single day... over the course of years. Because no only are people incapable of googling, but they are incapable of using this very website to look up answers without having to ask it themselves first. No effort whatsoever. People who are incapable of research are incapable of learning without being force-fed, and having others change their diapies for them.

The website (finally after YEARS) allow us to use photos. But still mathematics is difficult to render, LaTeX is not supported. Old bulletin board systems from 15 years ago allowed both of these capabilities, and then some (such as font styling, etc), but not YA. Too complicated, I guess.

Answers can be voted Best by the same person who gave it; and win with only one vote total.

Some people win BA with literally a dozen or more votes, despite the fact that they are neither the best answer nor were they the only answer (and none of the other answers, even the better ones, got any votes at all). Leading me to believe that there is a user-co-op or a single user with dozens of dummy accounts for point gaming. It is statistically impossible to get above 45% BA with more than 100 answers if you are legitimately giving honest and competitive answers, take it from someone like me with thousands of answers and struggling to maintain above 40%. And yet there are people with 50-70%, somehow. As good as this answer may be, I stand a real chance of losing it to someone else for some reason or another.

So yeah, I fully understand the frustration of putting in a lot of effort and time into a detailed and thorough answer just to have BA go to some one-liner given by a 'tard that is too dumb to even understand the question, much less the answer. But sadly I find that is what a lot of askers want; the answer, not the explanation, because they fear the challenge of thought, or of reading "too much". It doesnt even matter if an answer is correct, as long as it "makes sense" and is "easy to understand" in one or two easy-to-read sentences, regardless of the complexity of the truth.

That said, the reason why there is abuse is because of point gaming - thanks to yahoo who treated this site as a game since its inception by introducing the point system... and for the same reasons people feel entitled to win BA when they do give good answers, because even those of us who treat the system and the community with integrity are still just playing the point game. As Ive already outlined, other forums on the net are more technologically advanced, and you get more refined, intellectual, reliable information there too... with regulation and quality... but peope come here to YA (its popular) specifically because it is a game.

Highest level used to do so but really hardly everyone need the help that is leading to this station or some where else. Backfeed is not show yet but relations the really one. ( Why checker for us?) ( They run away to celebrate event)

I don't really care. I work physics problems for my own enjoyment. My wife works crossword puzzles for the same reason. I do enjoy a "thank You," but it is not required. I suspect most people that post a question, just copy the answer and keep going.
