This is confusing............................?

This must be confusing for people that are learning to speak English. You explain the word "hospital" to them, so then they know what it is. Then you give them the word "hospitality", how can you explain this to them?

Who knows what you English-speaking guys are thinking! You let their meanings be so different. From a learner' point of view, I say you tell the learner where the two words are from. like in the beginning, hospitable was a french word, or late Latin, anyway, it means be friendly to guests, and then its meaning expanded. Hospital means a place where needy people are taken care of, or an inn. Finally, ta-da, it means hospital.

Just tell the learner the history of words, you can tell them even a fake story (it must make sense), and remembering how to use these words is more important than knowing its resource.

    hope it'll help

Hi! It's not confusing to many Romance language speakers. In French we have "hôpital" and are taught in school that the accent on the o shows that the word used to have an s in Old French. We also have "hospitalité" and "hospice" and most of us French know they are all related.

Other languages have similar word pairs too: ospedale and ospitalità in Italian; hospital and hospitalidad in Spanish.

Also, I don't see why you'd have to tell learners a fake story. First of all, what's the point? The true story is interesting enough as it is Secondly, it's not very respectful to lie to people. Thirdly, if they end up finding out you lied to them, which might very well happen, you'll totally lose their trust.

A hospital is a place to seek aid when you need help. When you offer someone the hospitality of your home, you are welcoming them inside, and offering them food, and comfort.
